Wayne's World
Wayne’s World The Movie was about two nerds in their twenties who live with their parents and make a Cable Access show about nothing in particular and get into some wacky hijinks.
Wayne’s World The Game is like opening up Wayne’s head and having all of his insecurities flood out, running roughshod over everything in their path, until they block out the sun, leaving the earth a blackened wasteland. Like his soul.
The game is split in two between levels where you play as Garth and levels as you play as Wayne, but I kept getting the feeling that all of the levels were from Wayne’s point of view, and were meant to give you a barometer of sorts to gauge his mental state. When Garth shows up he looks cool as shit. He’s basically looks like a pimp early-80’s Miami doperunner. He comes strapped with a handgun, which he clearly didn’t have in the movie, and might as well be taking pot shots at Crockett and Tubbs.
When Wayne shows up he looks really dumpy. He has poor posture, he’s kind of fat, and he has a mullet. Far from having a handgun, his only defense is an ineffectual kick towards his enemies which makes him look off-balance and silly.
There are frequent levels where Wayne doesn’t even have enemies to kick towards. They take place in an abandoned donut store, where Wayne wanders around eating abandoned donuts off of abandoned tables and then crapping them back out on the display racks.
Those levels are pretty pitiful, but they aren’t as bad as the random look at Wayne’s failed love-life, wherein Wayne is shown belligering Stacy, who has sweetly brought him a present. In the next sequence he is shown stalking the singer of a local band, psychotically busting his way past a police officer and climbing onto the stage while she is singing to just stare at her.
And what’s Garth doing during Wayne’s harrowing descent into loneliness? He’s capping ninjas with his fucking badass handgun of course. Regular ninjas AND hovering pink ninjas.
Then it’s back to his bachelor pad, where his midget servant has already prepared his dinner.
When Wayne shows up Garth tells him to hit the bricks, even going so far as to warn Wayne about how windy it is outside. The subtext clearly being that Wayne is such a pussy that a stiff wind would probably be enough to bring the sweet oblivion that he clearly craves.
